Industrial, Nautical & Simply Beautiful Kitchen Design

Burlanes bespoke Hoyden kitchen in Greenwich, London

Tucked away in a lovely little side street in Greenwich, this London townhouse is beautiful and elegant, and so unassuming from the exterior! When the homeowners purchased the property in 2016, it was divided into three separate flats and in desperate need of some TLC! Two years on, stepping through the immaculately painted charcoal front door was an absolute pleasure, and it is certainly one of those houses that make you say 'WOW!'

Burlanes were commissioned to design, handmake and install the homeowner's dream industrial style, nautical themed kitchen, with inspiration taken from a bowl of beautiful mussel shells, handpicked from the harbour at Whitstable, Kent.

Initially a small room to the rear of the property, the kitchen was very cluttered with very little storage space; the homeowners dreamed of a large, open plan kitchen and living space, with glass rear doors to the garden and lots of natural light, so works on a rear and side return extension began. By opening up the back of the property, it was incredible just how much natural light flooded the room!

With a busy working schedule and two small children, Mr & Mrs Blundell wanted a  kitchen  that was not only beautiful, but highly practical too, and suitable for use by all the family. As keen cooks and regular entertainers, it made perfect sense to incorporate a large kitchen island into the design, with lots of preparation space, and an area to sit at too. The toughened glass cupboards add the perfect touch of glamour to the  Hoyden kitchen cabinetry , handpainted in 'Black Blue' by Farrow & Ball, finished perfectly with exquisite door knobs and drawer pull handles in 'Burnished Brass'.

The worktops are 'Eternal Statuario' Quartz by Silestone, and they really are as beautiful in real life as in the photos! All worksurfaces have their pros and cons, but Silestone worksurfaces are man-made from 90% natural quartz, and are therefore so hardwearing! They are scratch, stain and heat resistant, they can be cleaned with pretty much any household cleaner, and they have anti-bacterial properties too.

We often find that the most difficult decisions our customers have to make is choosing the appliances for their kitchen. We do not supply appliances directly, but we will happily source them for you, and recommend ones that we know you will love, and are high quality too! Mr & Mrs Blundell chose a Rangemaster cooker in 'Black', with chrome detailing. The Rangemaster is solid and built-to-last, and looks fantastic too. We absolutely love the contrast in metals; often our customers are afraid to mix metals in their kitchen, but we think it looks fab!!

The double belfast sink is from Rangemaster too, and the tap is the brand new  Flex by Quooker  - a true revelation!! The Flex is a boiling-water tap, equipped with a flexible pull out hose for hot, cold and filtered cold water. The dishwasher is integrated just to the right of the sink, the perfect place in the  kitchen  in our opinion, as it is so quick and easy to rinse cups and plates before loading to be cleaned.

An additional prep sink in the kitchen island was a last minute design choice, and the homeowners absolutely love it!! The island provides most of the worktop and prep space when cooking, so the prep sink is in the perfect spot for washing and peeling vegetables, filling pots and pans with water, and is in easy reach for the children to help themselves to drinks too. It also makes for the perfect ice bucket for chilling wine when entertaining too!~

A standalone piece of furniture at the rear end of the kitchen, the larder unit really is so beautiful. Housing the refrigerator and freezer as well as spice racks and vegetable drawers, it is such a well used and well loved aspect of the kitchen.

It may seem a little odd to some, but a sofa in a kitchen as big and beautiful as this one makes perfect sense, especially with such a fresh and green garden to look out on!! Your kitchen is the heart of your home, so a comfy place for the children to sit and chat to you about their day as you prepare and cook their dinner, or a warm and cosy place to snuggle up with a cup of tea on a Sunday morning is ideal.

When furniture is made-to-measure, you can really maximise and make the most of all available space, exactly what our design team have done here! Once an unused space and blank wall, a simple but beautiful bench, shaker panelling and a few coat hooks make a small and tidy bootroom.

There is so much about this kitchen that we adore, almost too much to write about! We are absolutely delighted that this kitchen was featured on the front cover of Real Homes February 2020! Visit our press page to read the full article.
