A Kent oast house renovation: bathroom

August 2017

Tucked away in the Kent countryside, this beautiful oast house has recently undergone an entire refurbishment, turning the property into a wonderful family home flooded with natural light and lots of character.

With a busy working lifestyle and two small children to consider, Burlanes worked closely with the home owners to transform a number of rooms in their home, to not only suit the needs of family life, but to give the wonderful building a new lease of life, whilst in keeping with the stunning historical features and characteristics of the incredible oast house.

"We have been so pleased with the team at Burlanes and the results of all their hard work.  From start to finish Lindsey has been incredibly helpful and supportive.  She has an incredible flair for design and colour and has provided a truly bespoke and personalised service.  Danny and Andy and the installation team were very responsive and skilled in ensuring we got exactly what we wanted.  The team at Burlanes were always able to overcome any issues arising out of our building project and were very solutions-driven.  We are thrilled with the end product, which has been tailored to our lifestyle perfectly.  Thank you everyone very much indeed." - Sarah Richards, homeowner

Great interior design is about making the most of all available space, and maximising it where possible. Downstairs toilets are often smaller rooms, tucked away in the corner of a house, or under the stairs. In this beautiful oast house, one of the most used downstairs loos was in need of an uplift. Our design team transformed the dark, small passage way into a bright and airy room, with handmade panelling to conceal the toilet cistern, and beautiful fresh wall paper.

Quite often, the finishing touches to a room are equally as important as the paint colour, or the wall paper! Our design team worked closed with the home owners to source accessories and furnishing to not only suit the style of the family, but also in keeping with the style of the house itself.

The main family bathroom was also in need of a total overhaul, and Burlanes were able to create a serene oasis in which the family can relax and unwind. There is just something so relaxing about a pale colour palette within a bathroom, and Mylands 'Chambers Gate' is just that. Paired with 'Classic Naturalis Marble Honed' wall tiles by Ca'Pietra, and simple white sanitaryware, the bathroom is blissfully inviting, fresh and easy to keep clean.

Maximising space is what our design team do best, and at Burlanes we always strive to make use of all available space. We designed and hand made this slimline floor-to-ceiling cupboard, not only to fill an alcove within the room, but to create a beautiful, useful storage space for toiletries and towels.

With an outdoor swimming pool and hot tub facilities, the homeowners wanted a ground floor wet room / changing facility that was easily accessible from the pool area and easy to clean and maintain. Burlanes designed and handmade a changing bench complete with storage and a bespoke floor-to-ceiling cupboard - perfect for storing robes, slippers, swimwear and towels.

Hand painted in Mylands 'Brompton Road', the furniture perfectly complements the handmade Butt & Bead panelling, complete with hanging rail and pegs. The marble tiles within the shower area add a real focal point to the room, and the floor-to-ceiling glass shower screen is not only beautiful, but really easy to clean too.

This flooring is a firm favourite of ours, and is fantastic for wet rooms. Unnatural Flooring offers the look and feel of natural flooring, but with the practicality and durability of a woven vinyl. It was the perfect choice for our homeowners, particularly with young children; strong, waterproof and slip resistant.

Just across from the wet room is a small alcove behind the most wonderful original rustic doors! Our design team were able to adapt the space into a small, but well-formed downstairs toilet. The Unnatural Flooring runs throughout this area of the house, perfect for wet feet after a dip in the pool!

As well as the bathrooms, Burlanes also renovated the family kitchen, living room, boot room and utility room / laundry.
