The Blue Wellsdown Galley Kitchen

We are so pleased to be back out on the road again photographing our clients' wonderful homes and their bespoke Burlanes furniture, and we kicked it off with the Blue Wellsdown Galley Kitchen in Chelmsford.

The owners purchased the beautiful townhouse a little over 18 months ago and have undertaken a huge renovation project, including a side return kitchen extension to the rear of the property.

By opening up the back of the house, not only does it now allow light to flood into the galley kitchen, it also created an open-plan living area which the family now spend most of their time together. 

Mr & Mrs Holloway wanted a classic, shaker style kitchen with an industrial feel, and Mrs Holloway was set on the colour choices before the design process even began, and what a fantastic choice they are!!

Handpainted in Bond Street by Mylands with the contrasting Soho House pink on the walls, the open-plan space is bright and inviting, and the run of tall cabinetry from the kitchen into the family area elongates the room. 

A peninsula is a great design choice if space for an island is not available. Not only does a peninsula provide additional worktop and storage space, a breakfast bar can be easily created with the worktop overhang, or in this case a bespoke wooden butcher's block, and it creates a clear divide between the kitchen area and the living space too.

Behind these beautiful shaker doors is the original fireplace of the 18th century property, that our Chelmsford design team transformed into a wonderful breakfast pantry!

Truly bespoke furniture can be designed and handmade to fit the room exactly, there really are no set sizes, off-the-shelf designs or fixed dimensions. 

Fully adjustable shelving provides space for glasses, mugs and crockery, and the three lovely handmade solid oak drawers contain fruit and vegetables within easy reach.

Corners are often tricky when designing a galley kitchen; there is often an abundance of unusable space that is usually filled with a corner pull-out solution or a cupboard that you cannot reach the back of! Our Chelmsford design team worked with the homeowners to fill the space with useful storage solutions, including a lovely drinks station with a bi-fold door.

Bi-fold doors are perfect for cupboards such as this, as they can be tucked back out the way and even left open if needed whilst the kitchen is in use, without causing an obstruction in the room. 

Just to the left of the bi-fold pantry, is such a useful pull-out larder, handmade to fit the exact dimensions between the pantry and the free-standing refrigerator. 

The run of cabinetry along the back wall of the property makes such a statement! An extension of the kitchen but also a clear divide between the kitchen and living area, the doors in the middle open up to reveal a concealed media unit.

With an additional formal living area elsewhere in the home, the family wanted a casual space to relax as a family, and the open-plan kitchen / living space is just that.
